Similar to starting a climb at base camp, teams in the forming stage are at the beginning of their journey.

  • Characteristics: Exploration, orientation, foundations.
  • Challenges: Uncertainty, lack of relationships & goal clarity.
  • Objectives: Build trust, establish team identity, and clarify goals.
  • Activities:
    • Icebreakers and introductions.
    • Team chartering: Establishing team norms, roles, and responsibilities.
    • Goal setting: Aligning individual and team objectives with organizational goals.
    • Visioning exercises: Defining team purpose and direction.

As the team begins to ascend, they encounter challenges and obstacles similar to those in the storming stage.

  • Objectives: Build trust, address conflict, enhance communication, and promote collaboration.

    • Conflict resolution workshops: Techniques for managing and resolving interpersonal conflicts.
    • Communication skills training: Active listening, assertiveness, nonviolent communication.
    • Team-building exercises: Problem-solving challenges, trust-building activities.
    • Role-playing scenarios: Simulate difficult situations to practice effective collaboration.

In the norming stage, teams reach higher elevations, where they establish routines and norms.

  • Challenges: Maintaining momentum, reinforcing positive behaviours, and aligning values.
  • Objectives: Strengthen relationships, re-establish team norms & identity, foster cohesion, and develop collaboration.
  • Activities:
    • Team bonding activities: Outdoor adventures, social events, shared experiences.
    • Group discussions: Reflect on team progress, and reinforce positive behaviours.
    • Values clarification exercises: Aligning team values and behaviours.
    • Peer recognition and appreciation: Celebrating individual and team achievements.
